Rick Jones Philosophy on Watercolor Painting..
"I am basically self-taught at this. I never thought about doing a lot with it until some close friends insisted that I show the public what I can do. Although my background was in technical machine work, I have always liked to draw and paint. Therefore I suppose I have gone into it via the technical side. What I did was to look at water color paintings that please me, recognizing the skills of the artists, then I would duplicate the techniques I saw to my own compositions of local scenes and points of interest. An artistic side gave me a feeling to whether I liked the results. " - R.Jones 2005.

Rick Jones on Medium Selection..
"I like the traditional colors but newly manufactured and lightfast, and I like some of the new staining type colors. Years ago I tried oils and acrylics. I never studied painting all that much. I just tried to do a scene I liked just by laying color on a canvas and working on it until I liked the outcome. I liked the oils because they had pure colors that didn't change when drying, but if I needed to redo something, it took forever to dry. Acrylics, unlike oils, dried rapidly but changed color as they dried. With watercolor I have that pure color I get with oils and the rapid dry time as with acrylics, but unfortunately I cannot change anything. Therefore I carefully plan my colors and composition before I start painting." - R.Jones 2005.

Observe and Practice..
"Watercolor paintings show a record of everything you have done from the first or lightest color to darkest. Unlike other mediums, watercolor is difficult to repair mistakes. If you make a mistake, the best way to fix it is to start over with a fresh piece of paper. Fortunately the more you practice watercolor painting, the fewer mistakes you will make. It's all about taking time to plan it out before hand and knowing a few 'secrets' (for lack of a better word) that artists pick up - composition, perspective, warmth and coolness, or what colors mix well together and what procedures are used. Every watercolor painting has these, so just keep them in mind as you observe and you will notice them."-R. Jones 2005
